Avalanche injures snowmobiler near Slab Butte

We got a report of a slide that injured a snowmobiler near Slab Butte on Sunday.  The specifics of the incident have not been released but we have also heard of multiple medium natural and human caused avalanches over the last few days.

Last week’s new snow and wind combined with recent high temperatures and lack of overnight refreezing have elevated the hazard in some localized areas. Be careful, check out ridge top starting zones before you ski or ride them, watch out around rocks or other thermal zones.

Please post any observations or comments that you see while recreating in the backcountry.  The info you share could help someone else make a good decision or even save a life.  We will post more info as we hear about the detail of this incident.

  1. Nice job on your page! Thanks for keeping the friends going! I have missed being part of the Friends since moving to Oregon. Sounds like the recent accident could have been a repeat of past accidents. I’m sure this will be a wake-up call for the motorized group and a reminder to all your readers. Hope you get some powder out of this next system.

  2. Randy! Good to hear from you! We do miss you since you moved over to the wet side! We had another avalanche accident on Friday March 6th. 4 skiers caught, 2 buried by Beaverdam Peak. Good rescue and everyone went home safe. We will see if the accident report gets out to the public.
